In this Spanish blog entry, we’ll have a look at the topic shopping and at some questions, answers and vocabulary (see at the end of the text) you’ll need if you want to buy something in a shop in Spanish.
You can use these phrases and questions not just in a clothes shop, but in other kinds of shops as well.

How to answer when the salesperson asks you something
If the (1) salesperson asks you if you need some help or a product, this is what you’ll most likely hear and what you can respond:
- ¿Puedo ayudarle en algo? ¿Te puedo ayudar en algo? Can I help you?
- No gracias, estoy (2) mirando. No, thanks, I’m just (2) browsing (if you don’t need help).
- Sí, por favor, estoy (3) buscando… Yes, I’m (3) looking for… (if you want them to help you find something specific).
And if you’re the one that wants to talk to a salesperson to ask a question because you can’t find something? Here’s a good way to do so:
- Perdona, ¿me podrías ayudar? ¿Dónde está …? Excuse me, could you help me? Where can I find…?
Asking for a different color, size or design
If you found a piece of clothing but you can’t find your (4) size, you can ask:
- Perdona, ¿tienes estos pantalones en la talla…? (pequeña, (5) mediana, grande). Excuse me, do you have these pants in… (small, (5) medium, large)
You can also use numbers (36, 38, 40):
- ¿Tienes estos pantalones en la 40? Do you have these pants in a size 40?
Okay, and in case you want to ask for a different color, or a different (6) design or (7) print, you can say:
- ¿Los tienes a (8) cuadros? ¿Los tienes con un diseño a cuadros? Do you have those (8) checkered? ¿Los tienes en rojo? Do you have them in red?
Watch out! We’re using “los” because we’re talking about “los pantalones” (pants).
The changing rooms
If you’d like to (9) try on the pants, shirt or shoes the salesperson got for you, you can say:
- “Gracias, me los voy a probar” (los pantalones). Thank you, I’m going to try them on.
- ¿Dónde están los (10) probadores? Where are the (10) changing rooms?
When you come out of the changing room, the salesperson might ask you:
- ¿Te/Le ha gustado? Do you like them? ¿Qué tal te/le queda? How do they fit? ¿Te/se lo vas/va a llevar? Are you going to take them?
Depending on whether you want or don’t want to buy the product, you can answer like this:
- No, no me los (11) llevo. No, I’m not (11) taking them.
- No, me lo voy a pensar. No, I have to think about it.
- Sí, me los voy a llevar. Yes, I’m taking them.
Time to pay!
If you decide to buy an article, you’ll head for the (12) checkout to (13) pay. In Spanish it’s called “cajas” because it’s where the (14) cajas registradoras are and where the money is kept. When you reach the (15) sales counter you can tell the salesperson:
- Me llevo estos pantalones. I’ll take these pants.
Usually the salesperson will (16) scan the (17) tag, tell you how much it is, and ask you how you would like to pay.
- Son 30 euros. ¿Cómo quiere pagar? That’s 30 euros, How would you like to pay?
You can respond in the following way:
- Con tarjeta/En efectivo, por favor. By card/ in cash, please.
Once you’ve paid, they’ll hand you the (18) receipt.
Vocabulary
Here you have the main vocabulary for this communicative situation. And further below, there are some exercises for you to practice.
- salesperson: el dependiente / la dependienta; persona que trabaja en una tienda hablando con el público.
- browsing: mirar; observar alguna cosa.
- look for sth.: buscar; ir mirando hasta encontrar algo que no vemos.
- size: talla; medida de algo.
- medium: mediano; de tamaño entre pequeño y grande.
- design: diseño; figura, dibujo o forma de algún producto.
- print: estampado; el patrón que tiene un producto.
- checkered: a cuadros; es un estampado que forma cuadrados.
- try on: probar; ponerse una pieza de ropa para ver si nos queda bien o no.
- changing rooms: probadores; lugar donde te puedes probar la ropa.
- take sth.: llevarse (algo); comprar algo.
- checkout: caja; en una tienda, es la zona donde se paga.
- pay: pagar; usar dinero para comprar algo.
- cash register: caja registradora; caja/ordenador con la información de los productos y donde se guarda el dinero de las ventas en un comercio.
- sales counter: mostrador; es una especie de mesa que hay en las tiendas donde está la caja registradora o también donde se presentan los productos.
- scan: escanear; pasar un código por un escáner para obtener información.
- tag: etiqueta; papel fijado a la ropa con información.
- receipt: ticket (tique) de compra; papel con la información y el precio de lo que has comprado.
